How Many Kilometres Is Too Many on a Used Truck?

There is no kilometre figure at which a truck becomes too worn to buy, and anyone who gives you one is simplifying to the point of being wrong. A linehaul prime mover can pass a million kilometres mid-life with its second engine barely run in, while a 300,000 kilometre tipper that has idled and crawled its whole life can be tired everywhere at once. The number that matters is not the odometer reading; it is where each major component sits against its overhaul life, read from the odometer, the hour meter and the service history together. This post is how to do that reading.

Why the odometer is the wrong first question

An odometer measures distance, and wear is not caused by distance; it is caused by combustion events, load, heat cycles, corrugations and time. Distance is just the proxy that is easiest to display. The proxy works tolerably for a truck that spends its life rolling at highway speed, and badly for everything else: kerbside collection, agitators, cranes, tippers on short haul, anything with a PTO. Two trucks with identical odometers can carry entirely different amounts of wear, which is why the odometer is a sorting tool for listings, not a verdict on a truck. Engine hours versus kilometres and why both matter

The hour meter records engine running time, including every hour spent stationary: idling on a worksite, running a PTO, keeping a sleeper cab cool. Those hours wear the engine while adding nothing to the odometer, which is why the ratio between the two numbers describes the truck's life better than either alone.

Divide kilometres by hours. A truck that has averaged in the vicinity of highway speed across its life has clearly spent that life rolling; a truck whose average speed works out to a crawl has spent a large share of its engine life stationary or near it. Fleet maintenance practice treats idle time as real engine wear, hot, inefficient and hard on oil, and one common fleet rule of thumb treats each hour of idling as the wear equivalent of tens of kilometres of driving. Fleets argue the exact conversion; the direction nobody argues. A truck showing modest kilometres and enormous hours has had a harder engine life than the odometer admits, and it should be priced as such.

Ask for both numbers in the first message. Kilometres come off the dash; hours come off the ECM, and a dealer or capable workshop can pull the ECM report, which also shows idle percentage, fault history and derates. A seller who cannot or will not produce hours is asking you to price an unknown.

What a million kilometre truck really means

A million kilometres on an Australian linehaul truck is middle age, not the grave, and the market knows it, which is why seven-figure odometers fill the listings without embarrassment. What a million kilometres tells you is that the first-life components are due or done: the engine has been rebuilt or is approaching it, the clutch has been replaced at least once, injectors, turbo, water pump and radiator have histories, and the gearbox and diffs are somewhere in their own overhaul cycles.

So the question at high kilometres is never "how far has it gone" but "what has been done, when, with what evidence". A 1.2 million kilometre truck with an in-frame at 900,000 documented by invoices is, at the engine, a 300,000 kilometre truck. The same odometer with no history is a truck priced for the rebuild you are about to fund, and what that rebuild actually costs is the number to hold in your head while you negotiate.

Duty cycle: linehaul, local, tipper and idle time

Interpret both meters through the work the truck did:

None of these is bad; each is a different wear signature. What you are avoiding is paying linehaul money for vocational wear, and the ratio plus the truck's fitted equipment makes the signature hard to fake.

Service history: what good records look like

Records are the difference between knowing and hoping. Good history is boring and specific: dated invoices from named workshops with kilometres and hours written on them, oil analysis results in a series, ECM reports, and consistency between all of it and the meters on the dash. A sticker in the door and a verbal "always serviced" is not history.

Records also defend you against the ugliest version of this subject: interference with the meters. Winding an odometer or swapping a cluster to hide distance is unlawful, consumer law treats it as the deception it is, and the practical defence is cross-checking, because a doctored dash rarely agrees with the paper trail. Compare the odometer against the oldest invoice, against roadworthy and inspection records, and against the PPSR history of the vehicle; how a PPSR check works covers what the certificate shows beyond encumbrance. Numbers that go backwards, gaps that coincide with ownership changes, or a cluster newer than the truck are all answers in themselves.

Component life is what you are buying, not the truck

The productive way to look at any used truck is as a bundle of component lives: engine, clutch, gearbox, diffs, injectors, turbo, brakes, tyres, batteries, each somewhere between fresh and finished. The odometer is one input into estimating each position; hours are another; invoices are the best one. Build the ledger for the specific truck: what has been done, what is due soon, what is unknown. Price the due and unknown items at real repair quotes and subtract. Manufacturers publish expected overhaul intervals in their service literature; defer to those documents for the specific engine and driveline rather than to any figure in a blog post, ours included.

Machinery: hours as the equivalent measure

Plant runs the same logic with the odometer deleted: hours are the primary meter, duty and material do the interpreting, and the service file does the verifying. The extra caution with machinery is that hour meters are simple devices, replaced when instrument panels fail and occasionally disconnected in a hard life, so corroborate the meter against service stickers, invoices and component wear, and treat a mismatch as an unknown-history machine. A framework for pricing a high kilometre truck

Bring it together into a repeatable method:

  1. Shortlist on configuration and rough kilometres, since the odometer is fine as a filter.
  2. Get kilometres, hours and the ECM report, and compute the ratio to read the duty cycle.
  3. Read the records and build the component ledger: done, due, unknown.
  4. Physically inspect and test drive, letting the truck confirm or contradict the paper.
  5. Price the truck as: fair value for its configuration, minus the due and unknown component work at quoted rates.
